Convert to the new Uzbek alphabet
Convert text in the current Uzbek Latin script to the new alphabet: sh → ş, ch → ç, oʻ → ö, gʻ → ğ. The reverse direction and Cyrillic input are supported too. Everything runs in your browser, your text is not sent anywhere.
New alphabet rules
The new alphabet has 28 letters and 1 apostrophe sign, the tutuq (ʼ). Oʻ, Gʻ, Sh, Ch are replaced by the single characters Ö, Ğ, Ş, Ç. Ng is dropped as a separate letter of the alphabet, but spelling does not change.
| Current | New | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sh sh | Ş ş | shahar → şahar |
| Ch ch | Ç ç | choy → çoy |
| Oʻ oʻ | Ö ö | oʻgʻil → öğil |
| Gʻ gʻ | Ğ ğ | bogʻcha → boğça |
| sʼh | sh | Isʼhoq → Ishoq |
| Ng ng | n + g | tong → tong |
| tutuq ʼ | ʼ | maʼno → maʼno |
- Capital letters follow the word: Shahar → Şahar, SHAHAR → ŞAHAR, Oʻzbekiston → Özbekiston.
- An sʼh split by the tutuq (Isʼhoq, asʼhob) becomes a plain sh in the new alphabet: sh is no longer a letter pair, so it can't be confused with Ş.
- Other apostrophes (maʼno, masʼul, eʼlon) stay as they are.
Frequently asked questions
Has the new alphabet law taken effect?
The current status of the law is shown in the "Law status" box at the top of the page. In general, a law takes effect after the President signs it and it is officially published. Until then, the current alphabet is used in documents.
When will the new alphabet become mandatory?
Exact deadlines will be known once the law is officially published. Official sources say school textbooks will move to the new alphabet step by step in 2027-2031.
Is the formatting of Word and Excel files preserved?
Yes. Text is converted paragraph by paragraph, fonts, colors, tables and slides stay unchanged. In Word the body text, headers, footers and footnotes are converted, in Excel the cell text, in PowerPoint the slides and speaker notes. Text inside images and diagrams is not changed. The file is not sent to a server.
What happens to the letter Ng?
Ng is dropped as a separate letter of the alphabet, but spelling does not change: tong, yangi, ming are still written with n and g. That is why the converter leaves ng alone.
Can I convert new alphabet text back to the current one?
Yes, choose the "New → Current" mode: ş → sh, ç → ch, ö → oʻ, ğ → gʻ. A plain s followed by h in new text (Ishoq) is written as s'h in the current alphabet (Is'hoq), otherwise it would be read as the letter sh. For Oʻ and Gʻ you can choose the official ʻ or the plain keyboard '.
Can I convert Cyrillic text to the new alphabet?
Yes, the "Cyrillic → New" mode first converts Cyrillic to the current Latin script using the rules of the Latin ↔ Cyrillic converter (е, ё, ю, я, ц, ъ and others), then to the new alphabet: шаҳар → şahar, Исҳоқ → Ishoq.
