Frequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube banner be?
2560×1440 pixels (16:9) is recommended. The minimum is 2048×1152 pixels and the file must be 6 MB or smaller. JPG, PNG, GIF (not animated) and BMP are accepted.
What is the safe area?
The 1546×423 pixel area in the center of the banner. It is always visible on desktop, tablet, phone and TV, so put your channel name, logo and main text there.
Why is only part of the banner visible on desktop?
On desktop and phone the banner is shown as a thin strip: the top and bottom are cropped, and on narrow screens the sides too. The whole 2560×1440 image is visible only on TV.
My image is not 16:9, what can I do?
In the "Fit and save" section choose crop from center (pick the crop position with the slider) or keep the whole image and fill the empty space with a color, then download a 2560×1440 PNG or JPG.
What image do I need for the profile picture?
An 800×800 pixel square is recommended; YouTube shows it as a 98×98 pixel circle. JPG, PNG, GIF (not animated) or BMP, up to 4 MB. The corners are cropped, so keep the important part in the center.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Checking, previews and re-saving all happen in your browser; the file is never sent anywhere.
