A quick guide for new channels
Practical tips that help when you start a channel and publish your first videos.
- Pick a short, simple handleYour @handle should be easy to remember and type. If it matches your name on other social networks, people find you more easily. See whether it is free with the handle checker.
- Banner: keep text in the centerMake the banner 2560×1440 pixels and put your channel name and main text in the central 1546×423 safe area, otherwise it gets cut off on phones. The banner checker shows this.
- A profile picture that works smallUse an 800×800 square. It is cropped into a circle and shrinks a lot in comments, so use a bold symbol or a face rather than small text.
- Fill in the channel descriptionIn your channel settings, say what the channel is about in 1 or 2 sentences and add links to your other social profiles.
- Make your own thumbnailUse 1280×720 (16:9), keep the text to 3-5 words and make sure it reads on a small screen. To upload custom thumbnails, your account must be verified with a phone number.
- Main keyword first in the titleA title can be up to 100 characters, but in search and on phones it is cut off after roughly 60-70 characters. Put the most important words at the start.
- Description and timestampsThe description can be up to 5000 characters. For video chapters to appear, timestamps must start at 0:00, there must be at least 3, each at least 10 seconds long, in ascending order.
- Consistency and analyticsPublish on a clear schedule. In YouTube Studio Analytics, watch thumbnail click-through rate (CTR) and watch time: they show which videos are working.
Frequently asked questions
Are these tools paid?
No, every tool in the YouTube hub is free and needs no sign-up.
Do I need to sign in to YouTube or give a password?
No. The tools work only with public data and never ask for your YouTube or Google password.
Where are my images sent?
In the banner, profile picture and thumbnail testers, the image is opened right in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
Which tool should I start with?
For a new channel, start with stage one: the handle first, then the banner and profile picture. Use the stage two tools before every video, and the stage three analysis tools from time to time.
Do the previews match YouTube exactly?
They are based on YouTube's official sizes, but YouTube changes its design from time to time, so small differences are possible. After publishing, check the result on YouTube itself.
